Baby, It's Cold Outside
It's still cold here in TN. We didn't get the snow that was predicted over the weekend, but we have flurries in the air today. Snow is predicted for parts of TN tonight and tomorrow morning. The wind is whipping!
Our killdeer continues to sit on her nest, on the cold ground, despite it all. Can I bring her and the nest inside until Wednesday when it's supposed to warm up, please?
I'm going to spend the day in the studio. I got some new gemstones that I can wait to work with. Lapis has always been one of my favorites. I love, love, love the color. Also pictured is Primavera Stone from the US. Both of these beauties, along with some other new gems, will be making their way into my shop soon.
I think I'll make another cuppa, sit back and catch up on some blog reading and hit the studio.
Until next time.....

A Mother's Love
The temperature has been all over the map around these parts. The warm weather forced flowers and trees to bloom earlier than usual. But plants weren't the only things that were fooled.
Our killdeer, that I've posted about a few times already, built their nest and laid 3 eggs. The nest, which is on the side of our driveway, is marked with rebar and landscape tape so the UPS guy, or anyone for that matter, doesn't run over it. It is impossible to see, if you don't know it's there.
Well, the weather has turned and we've had a few cold days with even colder nights. They were predicting 1/2" of snow for today and all I could think of was the killdeer nest. We've seen her sitting on the nest in pouring down rain in previous years, but the thought of seeing her sitting in the snow was a sight that I didn't want to see. I had visions of taking the cedar cat house and inverting it over her and the nest, but in reality I would never do that.
So far there has been no snow. This morning when I drove out the driveway, I saw her sitting there in the cold (20's), put the truck in reverse and ran in to get the camera. I stopped the truck next to her and took a few quick photos.
Nature amazes me constantly. This pair of killdeer come back every year. They build their nest in the driveway, no matter what is going on around here. They sit on the nest until the eggs hatch and then they're gone.
Until next time.....

Signs of Spring
Talk about a stormy Monday! We have some wicked storms passing through TN today. Our power has flickered on and off, but so far things have not been that bad. Fingers and paws crossed. The rain let up for a bit, so I have the windows open. Outside I hear a chorus of birds, light rain and thunder. All signs of spring.
A few photos from around the place this past weekend.
Pansies and spring onions
Lilac buds
Phlox

Killdeer-est
Last week, while walking out to the mailbox, I heard a familiar sound. The call of a killdeer. And sure enough, they were back. "Building" a nest in our driveway. If you ever saw a killdeer nest, you'd know what I mean when I say building. They move a few pieces of gravel around and scratch a hole in the ground. Voila! A nest is made.
Today while going to get the mail, I heard one of the birds freaking out. Sure enough, I walked over to the nest and saw these two eggs. Now all we have to do is sit back (and worry) to see if the eggs hatch.
They come back every year and build their nest in our driveway. We count down the days until the eggs hatch, hoping that they don't get eaten by a number of local prey.
Here are a few posts, with pictures from previous nests, if you care to take a peak. They are quite cute.
Click here. And here. And here.
Wish us luck.

Spring Arrows
I've been working on some new arrow jewelry that is either in the shop now or will be soon. Wire-wrapped with the colors of spring. You can find them here.
Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead this weekend. Hooray for longer days!
Have a great weekend. See you next week.
Until next time.....

Winter Reading
We sat down this past weekend and talked about the 2013 garden. Thumbing through our favorite seed catalogs with highlighter in hand, we chose the varieties that we'll be growing this year. Yesterday, I placed the seed orders.
This weekend will be in the high 60's to low 70's. I'm going to transplant some onion seedlings outdoors.
The clocks also change. Spring ahead! Life's about to get busy.
I've decided, that starting next week, I will only be blogging a few days a week. The plan is that I'll post on Monday, Wednesday and Friday instead of Monday - Friday, like I have been doing. We'll see how it goes.
Until next time.....

Fresh Eggs
These eggs mysteriously showed up at my husband's office. No one claimed them. No one knew where they came from. He told me about it and I suggested that he bring them home. They're simply gorgeous! And right after their photo shoot, I'm going to see if they're fresh or not.
Until next time.....

Beam Me Up Scotty
Wishing that I was walking the beach picking up shells, driftwood and beach stones.
Since that's not going to be happening any time soon, I decided to pull out some beachy supplies to make some new jewels for the shop. It instantly makes me feel better to hold something that came from where I long to be.
Until next time.....

March Comes In Like A Lion
I'm sitting here drinking a mug of Red Miso, warming my bones from this chilly March morn. Occasional snowflakes slowly fall from a grey sky. Rumour has it that we're going to get snow tonight, so I headed outside and picked a bouquet of mini daffodils.
I listed the necklace that I made with the beet dyed beads that I posted about yesterday. It can be found here. I would like to dye some of the beads blue and have been reading up on it. I don't really want to buy indigo, but I may if I can't find another alternative; preferably something that I already have on hand.
Well, I hope we wake up to a bit of snow in the south land.
Enjoy your weekend.
Until next time.....
